Week 3 run 1 question

Post by Gawii »

I found the step up from 90 second reps to 3 minute reps really hard work this morning. It didn't help that I had to stop and start the runs a few times because I was interuppted by the dog wanting a poo, a neighbour and some idiot who took an age turning into a road that I was about to cross.

Not making excuses though- I got to two minutes max before I got out if breath and had to slow to little more than a walk. It seems that the little more endurance is that bit too far for ms at the moment. I just hope my next run goes better. Any advice??

Hi Gawii,

I think you should try the run again. Hopefully there won't be as many distractions. I'm on week 5 and have had to slow to barely a run SEVERAL times over the course of the program.

And I don't think noting distractions is "making excuses." I think that stuff really messes with your motivation. I was supposed to do the whopper week 5, run 3 (20 minute run) the other day, and had my dog with me. Between neighborhood kids screaming about wanting me to stop so they could pet her (TWICE) and two of the neighbor's off-leash dogs charging us on our run, I was frustrated. I cut it short and went home.

Again, I vote to just try the same run again and see how you feel. If at that point (and others may disagree with me), I would say do one more of the week 2 runs before trying a week 3 again.

Hiya Gawii

Sounds like you've had a bit of a nightmare there. just remember that you are doubling the reps and that is going to be hard. My biggest problem is that the bodies willing but the mind sometimes is not.

The nice thing about this program is the ability to repeat.

It's great that you're at week 3. Your body will learn and it will get easier. I'm now in week 6 but in reality I've been going for 8 weeks and that is because some runs have been hard, but I just keep going at a run until I get there. Keep going the effort is certainly worth it.

Cheers

I just finished week 3, and like you I found the first run so so hard I was barely running!! The second one was a bit better but I swear the third run was fine! I felt great and could do the runs no bother!! Stick with it anyway, if you'd asked me at the start of the third week I would written exactly what you did!!

I also run with the dog so know all about poop stops :-)

Cheers for the encouragement and advice guys. I ran the second run of week 3 today with no problems whatsoever- kept a steady pace with my runs and felt great afterwards. Compared to my first run of week 3 it was like chalk and cheese!

It helped a lot that there were no distractions today- probably because of the rain.

I've just started week 3 run 1 & also really struggled, like you I had my dogs with me :) It was good to hear that the 2nd run will be easier.

It is pal- I had the third run this morning and I found it even easier than the second. I think it's all about pacing yourself and getting into the right frame of mind. That's partially where I think I went wrong with my first run- I was likely trying to jog too fast and I had all the distractions with the dog, people and stuff.

All the sources that I've found on the internet seem to tell you focus in the distance as you jog, but I find it a lot easier to stare at the ground about five meters in front of me. I keep in the 'zone' better that way and get less distracted. I'm sure that the advice is all to do with posture too, but I still manage to keep my back straight...
