Re: Absolute beginner seeks reassurance fast!
Great advice about keeping hydrated ... and not just a quick glass of water before you head out the door. My experience was that the first few weeks came as a bit of a surprise to my body and it took me a while to adjust. I also found that not every run was brilliant. Often though, a hard run came j...

Re: Roll of honour
Name: Ian Area: Wicklow, Ireland Completed: 9rd April 2012 It was my second go at the programme. I messed up the first time by doing 8 weeks and then the Dublin City Marathon. I can actually run for over 40 mins now. Training is well underway for this years marathon - the goal is to run the whole th...

Re: Getting ready for week two
Lucky you Mandy! I thought I was going to die on my first week..... both times ( I repeated the program after I took 2 months off). For me it didn't get any worse the whole way through... the first few weeks were the hardest physically for me, but some of the later ones required more mental preparat...

Re: SHIN SPLINTS Week 2-PLEASE HELP
Hi Jspears, There is a difference between an ache and pain. In the first few weeks I found that I had aches, but not pains. I was also quite stiff afterwards (2 - 24 hrs afterwards). I found that stretching well after the runs helps. Also just rotating my ankles while watching TV (guilt free) after ...

Re: 20 minutes!!! Oh lord help me!
Well done! Isn't it amazing how much influence your mind has on your ability to finish! I found that if I'm thinking about how hard it is it gets waaaaayyyyy harder than it really is and I'm more likely to fail. However, by thinking "I can do this no problem", I actually can. In fact I can...

Re: What do you do on your days off?
I may join in on the light weights. But not until after the lambing! The nice part about weights is that they continue to burn calories for up to 24 hrs after a session (unlike running). Read that in one of the running magazines.

Re: Trying to get started
Hi Angus, Here's one of the posts that I read when I first started this and it motivated me massively. http://forum.splendid-things.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=660&p=3548&hilit=inspirational#p3392 The first few weeks are tough, but you'll get there. Remember, it's not a race, it's a journe...

Re: 20 minutes!!! Oh lord help me!
Hey Neil, I don't think there is a single person who came to w5r3 that wasn't nervous about it... but there are a whole pile of people who found themselves the other side of that run and couldn't believe it. I actually didn't make it first time around - ran too fast. But I got there. You will too. K...

Re: Intense Ankle Pain (Week 2)
Re stretching before your run:- Stretching cold muscles is more likely to cause injury than prevent it. I have not stretched before any run on this program, just afterwards when it tells you to. I do spend at least 20 seconds per stretch though and do 2 cycles of some of them. I'm a lot more supple ...

Re: What do you do on your days off?
You don't have to do anything on your days off. Building core strength can help you avoid injuries though. Up to 5k it's not massively important IMHO. I don't do anything on days off (although I've been helping out on a farm for the last few weeks and that beats any workout!) My view is that I want ...
