Re: New and desperately unfit but hello :)

Weight: It's hard to say because I'm also eating less, so I'm not sure how much the running is contributing to weight loss. At this stage I burn about 200 net calories a run. That's only 600 calories a week, or about a sixth of a pound of fat (one pound of fat = 3500 calories). Running does seem, an...

Re: Go me! :)

Congratulations, Dixie! :) I can't wait for W6R3 this Friday, marking the end of the walking intervals. One thing I plan on doing after W9, if I feel up to it are intervals/sprints and so called "fartleks". For intervals, you run at a fast pace for say 2-5 minutes and then a slow pace. The...

Re: New and desperately unfit but hello :)

Hello. :) Like you, when I started, I was terribly unfit. Seemingly trivial amounts of exertion would have me gasping for breath! On the plus side I have history of running, but hadn't run in almost a decade. On the minus side I'm about 30 pounds overweight. With all the extra weight (I started at 3...

Re: Shin Splints - please advise

Keep us posted. I've never had shin splints that bad, but I did have a bad knee injury once and it was so discouraging. I wish you the best on your recovery. Hopefully you can find out somehow what led to the shin splints. I must say it has taken me a long time to listen to my body carefully and pre...

Re: Week 5 run 3 - The dreaded 20 minutes

After the shins splints Wednesday I was a little apprehensive of today's run. So I made an extra effort to take it slow and had to keep reminding myself that I was not trying to win a race but just finish the run. I also concentrated on "finding a rhythm" and paying attention to my mechani...

Re: Shin Splints - please advise

I felt the Mayo Clinic had the most comprehensive information when I was doing research on shin splints recently. Oddly, I was doing it only because I had had shin splints in the past, usually when starting a running program. But yesterday during the middle of the 2nd run of W5R2 I got them in both ...

Re: Week 5 run 3 - The dreaded 20 minutes

Mine is coming up this Friday. I had moderate shin splints during the second eight minute run today — first time it's been a problem really. I guess the longer the runs get the slower I need to take them, so I plan to take the 20 minute run about as slow as I can go! You'll hear back from me in 2 ...

Re: Go me! :)

Thanks Dixie, that is good feedback. The reports I read on these boards really motivate me. So many people sticking it out. It will help me when the going gets tough that many others before me have endured in the end. :)
