Terrible knee pain after week two.

Post by Mightyquinn »

Hi everyone! I started the program two weeks ago and despite a lifetime of never wanting to run, I find myself really enjoying my runs! I can't wait to keep going! Sadly, after my last two runs my knees have been very painful and after two days of rest now, they still hurt.

The pain is more intense in my right knee but basically is on the inner part of the knee and feels like its in the soft area under the knee cap. Sometimes it feels most painful when I'm walking and the leg is in the straightest position.

I've never had any knee related injuries in the past. I took karate in college, which I think may have done some damage to my knees, as we had to stand in particularly strange position for periods of time and I think it put some strain on my knees. I usually feel similar pains after sitting in one position for very long periods of time, like on long flights. The pain usually goes away a few hours after walking around.

Could this new knee pain be related? Is this type of pain normal and just my body adjusting to running? Anything I can do to lessen this pain during rest periods? I don't want to lose my motivation!

Hi there

There's a few things I would suggest:

- Get some good quality running shoes professionally fitted at a running shop. Only go somewhere where they actually get you to run and examine your gait. Ill-fitting shoes can throw all your running action out and cause these aches and pains. I got some shoes properly fitted and it sorted out the pain in my arches almost straight away.

- Pace! Most people start off too fast. I know I did. We're building strength and stamina - hopefully for a long-term hobby. You can probably afford to go slower, there can be gain without pain. Also, smaller steps mean less impact and bounce, which takes pressure off the knees a little.

- Have a look for articles/videos on stretching. Especially as part of your cool-down routine. It can make a difference.

Failing that, I'd seek a medical opinion - they maybe able to diagnose something specific that you can manage / get support strapping for.

Good luck, hope you manage to get it sorted.

Thanks Dan!

I probably should have mentioned the shoe-thing in my initial post. I'm lucky enough to live in a city with a good running store that fitted me for my shoes, so I'm hoping I can rule that out as the cause of my problems. I hope that it is an issue with stretching as I'm certain I'm not really doing an adequate job of it. I'm crossing my fingers that this is the answer!!

It sounds like a ligament problem. Please take it easy and see your doctor. He or she may be able to refer you to a physiotherapist or a sports medicine specialist who can show you stretches to help, or even give you a knee brace to help support the joint. Knees are important, and a misery when they're injured!

Hi

I've got the same problem. The pain started when I finished my second week. I did W3R2 today and I'm in agony. I stretched through tears this morning. And I can't put any weight on my right leg without causing any pain. I'm seeing an osteopath today and I'm really hoping he can help me. I've taken 4 painkillers already and the pain is still there. I don't know what I did wrong. I've been enjoying running so far but now I'm even too scared to walk. I will stop running till the pain goes away and start from the beginning but first of all I will see what my osteopath has got to say.

Hi there,

I have suffered badly this week too. I am on week 3 and started suffering last week. I was beginning to despair but then I found an article on doing straight leg raises and I did 50 of them last night and hey presto my knees feel so much better. I believe that everyone gets different types of knee pain so maybe the raises won't work for you but they certainly provided me with a high level of pain relief.

Just thought I would share and see if it helps.
