Personally, I would not bother with custom orthotics unless my doctor told me to try them. And I have had running injuries due to overpronating! Never mentioned orthotics. What's more important is to go to a running shop and get proper shoes. A lot of them will have special features (see this link for an overview: http://newbalance.custhelp.com/app/answ ... -stability) if you need them. If you've got proper running shoes, it helps dramatically in preventing injuries like shin splints, plantar fasciitis, and knee problems. Trust me: I thought I had the right shoes, never got fitted, and ended up with bilateral plantar fasciitis. It took almost a year for me to be able to walk without pain. You do not want something like that to happen to you.
