Week Eight - Tough

Post by verity »

How is it that I am finding Week Eight so difficult? I am on run two, but this morning only managed 15 minutes of the 28. I have rested for the last two days, so I was feeling fresh this morning. But every time I run I have a little voice in my head that is constantly telling me I'll never make it, give up now, stop running etc. etc. How do I turn off that voice? I feel like I want to strangle the son of a b***ch. Advice needed, please. Many thanks - Verity.

I hear you: week eight is very tough. I just bombed out on run 3 after ten minutes, lightheaded and a bit of nausea. Felt very guilty about stopping, so thank you for your post, good to know that others run into issues as well.
I've heard that voice too, I focus on the accomplishments so far: 8 weeks ago I was dying doing 1 minute runs, and when the ante was upped to three minutes, it didn't seem possible.... Now in week 8 in the program we have run for 8 times that seeming impossible 3 minute mark and that is pretty awesome and, I think, proves the voice of negativity wrong: I can go on.
For me, the formula looks like: the spirit is greater than the mind, the mind is greater than the body (spirit here non-religious and is like the karate "indominable spirit" or in the boxing world "heart") .
Maybe make certain you have a little water before you go out for the run, possibly after 8 weeks maybe a slightly different route if possible. maybe different scenery could help. one thin that has worked for me is to keep my head up and look around: distracts me from my breathing and fatigue a little.
Anyway, just thinking out loud, I know you will get past this speed bump. Take care.

I am just starting week 7, all long runs.

I eat a protein bar about two hours before I plan to run, and in that time leading up to the run drink about 500 mls of fluid, either water or an electrolyte drink.

I have started to change my route, going further afield instead of just running round the same circuit.

I also listen to running tracks on my ipod, and concentrate on my breathing.

I tell myself I am a runner, and that all runners, no matter what ability, get achey, breathless, feel as if they can't go on, but they have an inner strength and run through it! I do imagine all sorts when running lol!

On my next run, which is tomorrow, I might even tell myself I am running a marathon!

Probably because you were running too fast. Start slowly for the first 10 minutes, increase your pace a little for the next 10 minutes. Put on some Rock music and sprint the last 8 minutes.

Thanks, you three, so much for some great advice. I have yet to get out there again - too much socialising. I will run again tomorrow morning. This time I shall think of your encouraging words. I'll let you know how I go. Hope you're all well. Verity
