About to Get Running!
Re: About to Get Running!
What a small world that you both live in Brighton when so many on this forum are all over the world ! I'm just along the coast at Littlehampton. I'm 49 & have never been able to run for more than a minute ! I completed the plan a few weeks ago & I'm doing the Race for Life in Portsmouth next Sunday. Tina

Re: About to Get Running!
Gosh, another successfully completed program. Good for you! It really helps my wavering confidence. Hmm: I went strolling over Devil's Dyke yesterday. Beautiful, yes, but I found it hard going; and I really couldn't imagine that I was going to start running next week. I thought I might as well be attempting to fly. But as they say, don't fly before you can run.
Re: About to Get Running!
Devils Dyke can be pretty steep in places so i wouldn't worry about that! I have to say that i remember before I started i was almost afraid to start, I think because i was afraid that i wouldn't be able to do it! Also i do think running is funny - cos there is no big event....you don't have to sign up, join a class or something - you just go outside and start....it felt a bit strange to me....
It doesn't matter if you don't manage exactly what you think you are supposed to......just start and see how you go...whateber you do - you will improve a little everytime you do it

Thanks, Dawn. You're right, I'm sure. Definitely a little nervous in the way you describe: unsure at times if I can do it. I guess that's just natural (to all but those most annoyingly confident people!). Well, Monday is definitely my day to start: I have cleared the way; and I'm now feeling more encouraged (thanks to you, among others). I shall be out there: let lightening bolts chase me across the park; I will be running!

Oh, thank you, Dawn, for thinking of me! I'm still waking up (it's the medication; it takes a while). But it's a lovely sunny day, and as I wake up I'm looking forward to getting out there and achieving my day one run

Re: About to Get Running!
Hooray, I did it! I'll paste some comments from my diary here:
Day one of Get Running. A bit shocked at how hard it was getting only halfway through. Stamina is the problem with me; hardly able to catch my breath. I imagine this might improve quickly though. I believe that it's the same régime for the next 2 runs this week: I can't imagine it getting harder, right now! Chose to run without socks for better barefoot feel in my Vivo Barefoot shoes. Was landing on my forefoot quite well, but I think I could use the heel of the foot more to help absorb impact (albeit impact lessened by forefoot striking). But the actual running went well. One result though are sore calves. Benjohn warned me about this. Ouch. I did some yoga-based stretches on getting in. But I wonder how well they'll recover by Wed. I think I ran faster than I needed. That's just me. But if I'm really struggling on Wed there's the option there to take it easier. I'm feeling good about my run today, even though it was so gruellingly hard. And I'm looking forward to my next run. Fantastic!
Thanks for being there for me today, Dawn. How are you doing?

It definitely gets easier not harder - Well done ....the real battle is getting out the door. I thought i saw lightening as i was leaving Brighton today!
Obviously I can't comment on the barefoot bit (for which i am a little jealous!) But i know that you are likely to ache a bit tomorrow....which is ok cos you have a rest day! hoo rah!
I had a good run the other day (Sat) but not been able to get out again yet because of work - can't get out tomorrow either so Wed for me.....so i will look forward to meeting you here for a mutual update
