a cautionary tale

Post by starknut »

This is why you should always, always go to a running shop and get properly fitted for shoes: I didn't, ever, even though I told other people to. I thought, "I know my feet, I know what shoes work for me." And I was wrong. And now I have bilateral plantar fasciitis. :o

I am holding myself up as a lesson to you all. Always get properly fitted for running shoes. Do not make the same mistake I did.

How horrible for you. I have to admit I had to google it to find out what that was but it sounds awful. What does that mean for your running? I have to admit I run in the cheapest nikes I could find. The local running shop uses the blurb,' it might be more expensive, but the price difference is still less than the cost of a chiropractor or podiatrist'. Food for thought indeed. Now that I'm officially a runner, being on wk 6, I suppose I ought to investigate and invest, but until now, I suppose I've not thought of myself as a runner, and felt intimidated by going in there.

The physical therapist recommended trying new, properly fitted shoes for a while to see if that didn't make an immediate difference, and if I'm still having pain, I will go back to him for further treatment. He actually specializes in running injuries, and one of the other therapists there is a marathon runner, so I felt like I was in good hands! He did say it was great that I make an effort to stretch after my runs, as that makes a world of difference. Apparently lots of runners don't stretch?

Please do get properly fitted as soon as you can! Having the right pair of shoes for your gait and foot anatomy is so important! I would hate for anyone here on this forum to be in this position.
