On Week 2 - Legs sore!! Trainers to blame?

Post by stacey27 »

Hi all,

Firstly, what a fantastic app! And I have been reading the forums on the quiet to get inspiration for my running.

W1R1 I ran on a sand beach - mistake! Literally felt like my lungs and face were on fire - I was beetroot! But finished the full programme.

W1R2 I ran at a park which has a few (big!!) hills. Felt a bit easier, I walked on the hills.

W1R3 I ran in absolutely driving rain at a mostly flat park. Felt good. Pushed a bit more to roughly 2 minutes.

Ran W2R1 today and felt like rubbish. For the first 3 runs I wore my Nike Shox trainers but after doing some research realised these might not be the best for running. My shins seemed to agree with me.

Bought a pair of Adidas Adiprene but still feeling the pain. Nothing major, but niggly, and it travels up to my hip too.

Any suggestions?

You probably don't want to hear this since you just bought new shoes. But, i will tell you anyway. :) Just because you have new trainers it doesn't mean they are the right trainers for your feet. For example, I have flat feet so I need a running shoe that supports the pronation in my foot. I can run in a brand new pair of shoes but if they aren't the right shoe for my foot I will experience foot and shin pain. The same might be to blame for your pain. It is usually best to go to a running store that can take a look at your feet. They will even put you on a treadmill and look at your running then they can recommend the proper shoe for you. I hope this helps.

Yeh I was afraid that's what people were going to write! The thing is, I'm known for eh... 'giving up' on things, and whilst I am really enjoying it at the minute, that's not to say I'll be enjoying it in a few weeks time, hence not wanting to spend a whole lot of money at the one time.

I wonder if there are insoles that can absorb more shock?

That could always be an option. It never hurts to go the running store, if there is one nearby, and ask some questions. :)

I know what your saying, I tend to get a' bee in my bonnet' about my latest thing, buy all the kit, only for it to lie almost unused a few weeks later. This has been different though, I've stuck to this until now, and I've only just over a week left. I did however buy the cheapest pair of Nikes in the discount sport store, for that very reason but, so far I've no problems. Maybe your just getting used to running, or maybe there are underlying problems. If you do have a specialist running store nearby, you'll probably find them more than willing to chat and pass on some wisdom, maybe you do need different shoes, and maybe not, but if your in pain, your certainly going to give up.

Thanks all.

Yes, you are both probably right. I think I will go another couple of runs and see if it eases off (or I keep it up!)

I find the whole 'running' business phenomenal - everything is so expensive! I bought an arm band for my iPhone for £2.95 from ebay, in the running shop, it is £19!! :x

My other problem - I am going on holiday bang in the middle of the programme. Has anyone carried on on holiday and succeeded? I am going to Turkey so will be very very hot, although I am not opposed to the idea of getting up early and running.

Yes I think you are right! The reason I ran on a sand beach? So that no one would see me!

Same reason I went out in the p!ssing rain, I knew no-one would be in the park at that time so that motivated me. I am by no means a heffer or completely awful sight, but I'm almost 'embarrassed' at the stopping and starting. I think that people will think 'oh, she can't do it!'. Which is true, but still.

Anyway, for my next run I am going to go down to the promenade. It runs alongside a busy road and is always jam packed with runners so hoping I will fit in 'invisibly'.

Don't worry what people think, your out there doing it, plenty of people aren't. In fact, search back a couple of weeks for a posting called 'a blog worth reading' or something like that, it's truly inspirational for all us beginners.
