Swollen ankles

Hi All--I'm on week 5, ready for run 2. All has been good up to now (finished all runs albeit at a slooooow pace) until yesterday when my ankles started to itch and when I looked at them and realized they were swollen - both feet on both sides of the ankle. No pain but it freaked me out. Is this running related? Anyone else experience this? Thanks!

That's a new one on me, and I didn't get far with a Google (have a go yourself though).

A suggestion though, are you using a new washing powder, or perhaps did your washing machine not do the rinse properly last time you washed your socks? Or perhaps, were you running with thicker socks than usual and getting very hot and sweaty around your ankles?

If they're painful or swollen or inflamed, then I'd definitely suggest talking to an expert. If they seem to sort themselves out though, I wouldn't worry too much :-)

Cheers,
Benjohn

Thanks Benjohn -- for the response and the miracle of the app that has actually succeeded in making me want to run. Believe me, it is nothing short of a miracle! The swelling went down after I iced and elevated. There was never any pain and the itching turned out to be due to the tightened/stretched skin. I did Google extensively and found a few other newbie runners who experienced swelling after running. I run on the treadmill and did my last (pre-swelling) run on an incline of 2, so I think I caused some trauma to my previously lazy ankles. Anyway, except for a little apprehension at getting back on the treadmill, I'm fine. Thanks again.

Thanks very much!

Glad to hear you're okay now. I've heard people say an incline of 1 about matches flat road running, so I should think 2 would be pretty hard going – I've not really researched it though!

Happy running,
