Week 3 Run 1

Post by Ian »

I just finished week 3, run 1. I was dreading it and put it off for most of the day. I was surprised. While the jump from 1 1/2 mins to 3 mins seemed big and I struggled a bit, my recovery time afterwards was much much better.

I had been worried that the hill I live on would finish me (100m climb over the distance) but by slowing right down I managed it and will be able to push a tiny bit harder next time. The encouragement in my ear was great for this run too.

I'm so impressed with this app and feeling really motivated today. I am already beginning to wonder why there is not a 5-10k version though. I have faith that I'm going to get to the 5k mark, but I am not going to be happy stopping there.

I have never run before. I'm 38, 6'2 and weigh 105kg. Oh, and I smoke. I have also had very little excercise for the last 20 years. So if I can be confident of doing this programme then anybody can be.

Great! Good for you Ian. Your experience sounds like how I felt 5 or 6 weeks ago. Now eager to get out to do my w8, 28 min runs. Even broken away from the programme and done some longer (35 adn 39 min) runs during week 7! And 2 months ago i coudl only just do the 1 min runs. I'm loving this - and surprising friends, wife and kids! Supposed to have a day off between w8r2 and w8r3 romorrow - but already wondering if i can manage a smeaky run. Watch it - it'll grab you!
There are a number of other apps out there. One I have downloaded is called 'Bridge to 10k' Not done by Benjohn sadly (I sooo wish it was...). I've not looked at B210K yet - from what i have read on the 'Graduate Forum' here it is not as good as this 9the lovely Claire's voice is absent! :( ) I've recently started another app called RunKeeper. It plots your course out and gives feedback on speed, pace etc. Again - not the lovely tones of Claire but might be useful. Prob best at this stage just to get into the GetRunning programme - and share your experiences here! Cheers. Mike
