New guy- On my second run of week one...

Post by Gawii »

I have not really done structured excercise since I joined a gym about ten years ago, so I was hoping that this app could get me back to fitness.

I am 28 years old, male, a little overweight, my diet wasn't excessive, but I have had the odd takeaway and I have never been a calorie counter. I started the programme on Sunday and found the 7th rep of running quite hard work, but I got a 'second wind' before the final rep and ran fine. Today I ran the second run of week one and found it a little easier.

I have cut back on the crap- no chocolates and no snacks, and I eat a bowl of Weetabix before I go out for my runs in the morning. I was wondering what the best diet would be on the days between runs- anything I should be eating more of and what foods should I avoid?

I was also wondering at what point did you guys see a marked improvement in your fitness- what week stood out for you?

Hi Gawii,
Congrats for starting the program.:)
Don't be surprised if you find each week to be a bit of a challenge. It takes time to condition the body to running.
Regarding food, you are on the right track, cut back on junk food and subsitute with healthy food. I usually have coffee and a banana before my early morning run. Not recommending this; it just works for me. I'll have a light breakfast after running.
I noticed a change in my body after completing week 2. My upper body and thighs felt toned, and my posture had improved. Running has done more for my abs than sit-ups ever did!
Good luck, and stay the course. You won't regret it!

Hiya Gawii

Good to here that you're enjoying the running. I'm 40 and really my gym work was weights. I'm now on week 5 and I have to say from week 3 onwards I felt great after each run. Tired yes. But a great feeling of calm.

It does get easier I'm now running 20 minutes no problem and starting week 6.

Stick at it. If I can do it at 40 you can at 28.

Good luck

Thanks for the encoragement mate. I have never, ever been someone who has done structured excersise, so like I said in my opening post, I am/was unfit and overweight. This plan has been brilliant so far- I am up to Week 2 Run 2 and I felt fantastic this morning- I even sprinted the final 15 seconds of the final rep. I think the great thing about this plan is that you can look back and see improvements; Like in Week 1, run 1 when I was gasping after about 30 seconds of the 7th one minute rep.

I've recently changed my route too, from the busy main road to the quieter backstreets near a graveyard not far from where I live- wider footpaths and the dog has more free rein.

Good luck with your plan Bryan- life begins at 40! lol.
