Week 5 run 3 guide/tutorial

Post by morgannixon »

I can imagine someone who is on this plan looking at their progress and feeling good... until week 5 run 3 shows up. Everyone has done the "How the heck can i do this?" But do not fret because i have a simple plan to ease you through this run as painless as possible. First on your itouch/iphone make a playlist of all the songs you know that gets you pumped up and ready to go, or even some you forgot about but want to listen to again. An alternative to this is to get an audiobook of a book you havnt read yet or desperately want to. With these, your mind wont even think about how much oxygen your legs need or how out of breath you are. You will just be enjoying yourself. Now the most important part is the pace. If you can find a pace where you can breath easy and where your legs wont hurt at said pace then try and keep it as best as you can the run will fly by and you will feel great. I know everyone is different but try your best and you will succeed :)

P.s. I did this run tonight and with this advice i just had to breath through my nose, for 20 minutes :D

I love it when the voice tells me to slow down if I have to. Snails pass me by!

Barneyhairball here again. I actually did it! I mean I actually ran (ok crawled very slowly, but still more than a walk!), for 20 minutes (1.6 miles in the car)! I am soooo happy! I never thought it possible. I now see why 'they' make us do this now; ie, going from 8 mins to 20 mins seems too great a jump. But ... by going so slowly it made it possible for me to do the 20 mins. I then wondered why the App should return to a measily 5 to 8 mins (get me!). It is because I will be able to run faster. Doing intermittent runs of quick and long runs will build up my speed and increase indurance (spelling?) :D , depending on which I am doing that day. Does this make sense?! It does to me anyway! I can't wait to get to 25 mins; I can't believe I said that.

:-) Hi BarneyH!

I'm really glad to hear from you and to hear you did well with the 20 minute run! I've just been answering your question on Get Satisfaction (sorry not to have done so sooner, by the way), so it's a relief to come hear and find it went well!

So that's it :-) If you can do 20 minutes, you can do anything, with just a bit of time and patience. Believe it! Oh – and if you have a bad run, or a bad week of runs, that's not failure: it's just experience. Don't worry about it, you'll have good ones again soon enough!

Happy running,
Benjohn
