Well, I did my first run of week one today. Feel great now, but didn't at the time!
Does anyone use this app on the treadmill? I've just started going to the gym so thought I'd use this app there rather than running outside - I don't know whether that will be an easier or harder way to do it.
Just to give some indication of slowly I must have done it today, I walked/ran 2.5km in that first go. At points I slowed down the treadmill to 3.5km/hr The worst part of it was that my shins were absolutely killing me!
Well done! And welcome to GetRunning. I've no experience using this app on a treadmill but I'm pretty sure I've seen other posters here who have. My understanding is that treadmill running is kinder on the knees than outdoor running cos the machine absorbs some if the impact. Hope you manage to continue. I'm really chuffed. Doing my second run of week 5 tomorrow - facing my first 8 minute run durations! But only 4 weeks ago I'd just started. I've really enjoyed this app. Feels like I've got a personal trainer and someone who really knows how to pace me. Not bad for 59p! Keep us posted - and good luck! . PS. Don't forget your stretches after cooling down. Might help yr legs
Thank you! The thought of running for 8 minutes terrifies me...but I guess that's what this app is all about. My legs are feeling pretty heavy tonight, think they might be a bit sore tomorrow.
What kind of stretches do you do? Got to admit, I just did the 5 min warm up and cool down walk and nothing else
Hi there. This is my first post( haven't felt confident of getting to the end before). Just done week5 run3 and what a thrill to be told I'm now a runner. It's my ruby wedding anniversary today and I shall bask in a glow all day. Good to see several 'oldies' in the posts, I shall be 60 next week and had never run before in my life but I started this app with my daughter as we both wanted to get fit and we are so proud of ourselves. She arrives home half a street ahead of me but we still motivate each other for each run. Having a running partner is a real help. We stretch after our warmdown using exercises from the link on the app.
Wow! Congratulations! What a fantastic achievement. You are an inspiration. Hope you have a great celebration. You are a run ahead of me. Glad that you got through the 20mins ok. Keep posting.
Hey latestarter! Wow, you've definitely inspired me to keep going! Woke up very sore this morning, legs feel heavy, started making excuses in my head why I shouldn't do it again tomorrow! But I will. I can do this!
(definitely learnt my lesson with the stretching though!)
Stick with it Catkins. The fact your legs are complaining means the muscles are wakening up. It's a good sign! Try a soak in a warm bath tonight and have a good glass of tonic water tonight (gin is an optional extra!); the quinine in the tonic might help your muscles (and certainly won't do any harm). Make sure you do at least 5mins fairly brisk walk as warm up as this is what really helps, I feel. Good luck tomorrow and come back and report how it went!
Thanks everyone. I will keep posting as it was advice from others that helped me through. As has been said often it is all in the mind and we just need to believe that by slowly building up we can manage each stage. My muscles cried out after the first run but that soon wore off. Good luck on your next runs.
I started the app on the treadmill because I was worried about my knees. About week 3 I felt stronger and started running outside. This week I'm back on the treadmill as it has been 108 F here in southern California and I wanted to keep going (just finished week 7 and the end is in sight)! One tip I got here on this forum is to put the treadmill on a 1% incline to better simulate outside running.
“Suddenly, I was part of something. I was part of the running community. The more open I was about my running, the more open others were about theirs. I found out that runners love to talk about running.”
