I love this program...

Post by bravotango60 »

I am 51 year old who has never like running in the slightest but got tired of all kinds of diets, etc that were temporary helps. I decided to try Get Running and I am fixing to do Week 7 Run 1 tonight which is just a repeat of 6x3. To me, it is unbelievable that I ran the 25 minute 6x3 run last Friday..but I did! I remember when the 1 min runs were tough! I just put on my Christian music and claim Philippians 4:13 (I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me) when I start struggling and the time just keeps on ticking! I can't do this without His help!

I have a dilemma though! I am seriously debating attempting the Tulsa Run 5K this Saturday morning in lieu of my 7x3 run that is scheduled on Friday. Does anyone have think that I should just stay on this program for now and do my run on Friday and pass on the 5k attempt? I was just going to start my 7x3 run, listen to Claire and ignore her when she tells me to stop and cool down!!!! I don't know if I can do a full 5k without stopping but then again I didn't think I could do what I have done so far. My distances on my 25 min runs are not long and I am thinking it will take about 40 mins if I try to run the whole way. That's a big jump from 25 mins.

Any thoughts/recommendations?

Thanks,
Brian

Hi Brian - Well done on your achievement and enthusiasm! I know it is tempting to extend runs beyond the 25/28 stages in week 7 and 8 - I did longer runs than Coach Claire suggested and it was OK for me. I guess you just need to decide if you feel ready for it. After the 7 weeks you have been training now - your body may well be ready for more that the 25 mins you are scheduled. In week 7 I followed my instinct and did a 42 min run and - other than wobbly legs - felt great afterwards. At the end of the day - if you need to slow down and walk for a while - then it's OK. Keep you pace slow - and enjoy the journey you have followed so far. On the other hand - if you prefer to wait till you have finished the programme proper then remember - there will be loads of other 5k's you can do at a later time. Let us know what you decide to do! Cheers Mike
