Hi Amy. I've certainly heard it said that treadmills can be kinder to the knees than roads. But the biggest factor - I think - is that you have the right running shoes Treadmill or road will all cause problems if your shoes don't absorb impact or don't compensate for over-pronation.
Personally I don't like treadmill running. The whole gym scene is not what i enjoy - and it is very expensive. I also get bored on a gym treadmill. On the other hand many folks prefer it - and it certainly is convenient if you are already in a gym doing other stuff. And if you have to run in the dark or hate cold frosty/snowy outdoor runs this is probably a consideration.
I guess the most important thing is just to get running - whether on a gym or outdoors. Try both. See which you knees prefer! Cheers Mike

There is a lot more give in a treadmill than a road. Keep a 1% incline on it to make it equivalent to running on the flat outside. Like keep trying.... Not my thing. I do have a weak left knee but so far so good on this programme outdoors but with shoes that compensate for my over pronation. The right shoes make a huge difference.

Thanks everyone, good to know since I do prefer running on a treadmill.

Well, I prefer it because you don't have to deal with the weather, I'd never run after dark where I live and the main one - I feel self-conscious running outside surrounded by people who aren't exercising too.

If it weren't for those things I'd prefer running outside!
