Newbie with a 10k goal..yikes

Post by Nicola1 »

Hi all, we'll as you can tell from the title I'm a beginner to running ( more like bum shuffling actually), I'm currently on w1r3 today.
I'm several stone overweight and have never run before, I bought a running machine several years ago but found it so boring it never inspired me to go outdoors, and just ended up gathering dust!!
I've recently been persuaded by a friend to sign up for the Edingburgh 10k run in 19 weeks and 3 days time ( not that I'm counting!! Lol) and need all the motivation that I can get.
I have to admit first two runs weren't too bad and I put an extra couple of seconds on the running part, running outdoors is so much better than a boring treadmill although I do hate looking like a bright red beacon at the end of the runs and hope to god I don't see anyone I know
Today I'm going to see if I can jog for 2mins and reduce the walking time, although dont want to put myself off by doing too much too soon but feel pressurised due to the target I have to achieve...yikes. At this stage I can't imagine running 5mins solid let alone 5-10k!!!
Also has anyone else had problems trying to loosen up when your running, I seem to do a lot of shoulder swinging with arms up quite stiff and no matter how many times I tell myself to relax, my shoulders just won't listen

Somewhere in the first few weeks, you will find your rhythm. Until then, just keep making a conscious effort to maintain good running posture.

Thanks for the reply, maybe the longer I run the more confident I'll get life my head up and relax my shoulders, I just feel I'm exerting a lot of energy rolling my shoulders. Week 1 completed, so now onwards and upwards :-)
