How do I post Status Update to Facebook?

Post by junkyardheart »

Please help. I've just completed Week 1, Day 1 and I wanted to post my Get Running Status Update to Facebook but for the life of me I can't figure it out! I've ticked 'Compose Status Update' in the settings for 'After Each Run.' The only way it gives FB as an option is if I change the Use External App switch to the 'On' position, which I've done. Then in the 'Post With' settings I've selected Facebook. Well, twenty-five minutes later and I've seen no status update posts to my Facebook profile.

It does say "Your Status Update will be on the pasteboard." Well, that might be useful if I knew what the pasteboard is, but alas I do not.

Can anyone help?

Thank you!

Hi, okay…

Assuming that you are using iOS4, this is not working properly at the moment, but will be working better when the Get Running update is released. I'm sending it to Apple tomorrow (plan to), and Apple usually take a week or so to review things…

What should happen is that after your run, the Facebook App should launch automatically in to the screen that lets you enter your "Status Update". You can then paste your update in simply by pressing and releasing on this screen. You'll see a little "Pop over" message appear with the word "Paste" in it. Press the "Paste" button, and the status update will be copied in. Press "Share" as normal to send it out.

(I realise this is not ideal, and that this work flow isn't as good as the Twitter support. You've been the first person to mention it though, so I've not focussed on improving it before now! If some others want it, I can add fully automatic face book support).

However, the Facebook App is _also_ broken at the moment, and obviously, I can't make them fix it! What will instead happen is that the face book App will just launch after Get Running, and you can go to your "Wall" and choose "What's on your mind" to compose a status update as above.

So – a couple of problems there, sorry for that. I'll improve with the new release, and if enough people ask, I'll add in first class Facebook support so that it can be automatically posted too just as you can with Twitter at the moment.

Thanks,
Benjohn

Hi I too struggled with the facebook option so I created an account on ping.fm and after each run I go to compose update on the get running app. This takes me to the ping page where I need to log in. It doesn't unfortunately compose a status there and then, presumably because I don't have an automatic login. What I do, is after logging in I open get running again, go to compose update then it will work as it registers that I'm logged in.

This posts to my facebook and twitter simultaneously. It sounds long winded, but really it only takes a minute. I have ping set in the get running options as my default status thingey! Hope that helps.

It's nice to know someone's using the "Ping.fm" integration! I wondered if anyone would!

I'll have a look at that as it (the ping.fm web site, not Get Running) ought to be remembering that you are logged in. Maybe when you log in you can set a flag to "remember me on this computer", or something?

After you enter your details, Ping.fm also ought to take you to a compose update page that's pre-populated with the update message, rather than you needing to request the page again using Get Running. I'll try to get in touch with them and mention that – I think it's a problem at their end, rather than Get Running's fault! :-)

Thanks!

Hi I did it again this morning and the app took me to the ping.fm login page automatically as it's set up to. Then I entered my details and it showed a blank status box. I returned to the app to get to the compose update option which returned me to ping.fm and populated the box.

Remember me wasn't updated so that was my mistake, maybe now it will be smoother? I'll let you know Friday!

Ok, thanks. I'm happy to hear that it's being worked on. Having easy Facebook status updates will really help with the motivational aspect of a running program. Knowing that my friends will be looking for my updates, and teasing me when they don't see them, will give me the extra push when I'm feeling lazy! :)

The problem I have is that when I finish a run, it does try to connect with facebook, but since I'm not connected to a network at the gym it cannot post to facebook. So how can I later, when I get home and connect to my computer network, post my results on facebook?

Ah – that's an easy one.

To post an update later (or any time you like), just launch Get Running, press the talk button at the bottom right, and then choose "Compose Update Now". It'll launch the Facebook App (if that is what you have selected), and at that point you can paste in the update by pressing on the bit of the screen where you write your update.

Hope this helps!

Cheers,
