New and looking forward to my first 5K, but...

Post by Docsouth »

Former Army (11B) and use to run all the time. I don't remember shins hurting like they are. Any ideas of what would ease the pain? Looking forward to participating in the forums and getting to know the community.

I fast walk on average 4.5 miles each walk 4-5 days a week in a great pair of walking shoes. However when I started to blend in some light jogging, my shins started to scream at me, oh, and on those days I wore my running shoes. Just yesterday I purchased myself a new pair of running shoes after visiting a specialty running store, and I was wearing the wrong type of shoes for my feet. I have a Neutral arch with a bit of over pronation, and I was actually wearing a shoe that forced my foot to the outside, which was killing my arches, placing more pressure on my calves.

I'll try out the new running shoes tomorrow, but chances are, you just need to be fitted for the right type of shoe for your foot. It's amazing what I learned about running shoes through researching online. But visit a running store, not a big chain, to get fitted properly. It will make a world of difference!

Oh, and ice your shins if they are hurting. That also makes a big difference in healing.
