I've had shin splints on and off since I began running last year, which was more an annoyance than anything else, but since starting the C25K program, YIKES! Any pressure on my shin is horribly painful. I almost couldn't complete my 2w2d run today, it hurt terribly to change my stride between running and walking. Now it feels like I've strained my calf muscle, as well. I'm not happy! I am waiting for the doctor to call me about a physical therapy consultation, so I really hope between this break I'm having to take, and a little PT, I'll be back running soon.
Had that problem when I tried to run last year (on my own with no programme). Highly recommend you get gait analysis at a specialist running shop and get shoes to fix any pronation problems. In my case I overpronate and just having the right shoes for me made a world of difference.
Also, try to avoid running on concrete. It's too hard and will make any problems you have even worse. Give yourself a week off too, to heal before you start again.
Lastly, take it easy when you run. It's all about the length of time you run, not how fast you run. If you push it too much you are far more likely to injure yourself. Even with the right shoes! I have a weaker left leg and have to be very careful of it. If I'm not, then I don't get to run. Keeping that in mind helps me to take it a little easier.
Agree with Ian, I ran in trainers and the pain was so unbearable to the point the gym stopped me running for 2 weeks.
I went to a proper running shop and they had me on the running machine and videoed my legs as I ran.
My new running shoes cost me £90 but they were worth every penny.
My knees still hurt after I bought the new running shoes but my trainer at the gym said it was my legs adjusting and he was right.
I run on a treadmill which I can up or reduce the speed depending on how I feel.
I have no pain at all now when I run
Hope this helps ?
I actually - and this sounds terribly weird - switched to "barefoot running" to strengthen my ankles, and with wearing Vibram Five Fingers during a run, I have noticed my ankles and knees feel SO much better... so I really, desperately hope it isn't the shoes, because they are just so amazing in every other aspect.
Unfortunately, treadmill running isn't really an option. I have no one to watch my son while I'm out, so I take him with me in a jogging stroller and run the sidewalks in our neighborhood. If I wanted to use my treadmill, I'd have to drop mini-Stark off at daycare three days a week.
Physio finally got hold of me and I'm getting seen on Monday, which is kind of sad because I'm feeling so much better: I've been chasing after my son all week, and even though it hurts my leg to get moving, it really feels fine afterward. So Friday I'm going to finally complete week two's runs and see how I fare over the weekend.
Well, I went out in the cold and wet with mini-Stark all bundled up, and I think I slayed it! My leg twinged a few times, but I kept a good pace and felt like I could have kept running each time Coach Claire told me to walk. Monday will be the real test, when I start week 3. I'm so excited to get going again!
Yay well done
Just about to do my week 5 run 3 which jumps to 20 mins running non stop.
Managed 15 mins on Thursday before the body gave up so dreading my run tomorrow and running a straight 20 mins.
Glad you're not in so much pain, that can be a real drag.
Bet the weather in Miami is a darn sight nicer than here in the Dales UK.
I'm doing the whole run on the treadmill mainly because I live in a hamlet with only 120 people and 6 street lights.
Very different to Miami when we wnt there!
Have fun with your running
“Suddenly, I was part of something. I was part of the running community. The more open I was about my running, the more open others were about theirs. I found out that runners love to talk about running.”
