Finished!

Post by Petra »

I guess I should post this in the Graduate Forum, but since the audience here is bigger (I assume), I post it here :-).

Yesterday afternoon I did my last run! I started in July. I thought it would be very difficult, but allthough it wasn't easy, it was doable. Still can't believe I'm now able to run for 30 minutes!

However, there are two minor disappointments:
- I haven't lost any weight since I've started (that was one of the goals)
- I still don't run 5km. Yesterday's run was 4,5 km, including the 5 minute warming up and cooling down. But my legs are rather short (in fact, I'm rather short), so probably this is a good speed for me.

Never mind, I want to continue my training. I've downloaded the 'Bridge to 10k' app, which doesn't look as nice as the c25k app, so from now on it will be Jim who will coach me instead of Clare. And I'm considering to do a 5 mile (!) run on November 13., but I'm not sure if that's feasible for me. But it's in the park next door, where I've done all my training so far, so it's very tempting to participate. Unfortunately they don't have any shorter distances, except for the kids run :-).

I'll stick around here on this forum for some time, because I like reading about your running experiences.

Petra.

Don't be dissapointed you should be so proud of yourself for completing the course, to run 30mins is still just a dream for me (I'm on week 2 run 1) who cares how far you run, speed I'm sure will come with time and if your short (I'm a shorty too) then your probally being too hard on yourself.

Please keep us updated on how the new app is, I'm already wondering what I'll do after this course is over so will be great to hear how you get on.

Once again Congratulations on finishing the course!!!!

Congratulations Petra,

I have lost less weight than I expected so far too (about a kilo a week - just). I am changing shape slightly though. On some forum somewhere I saw the following quote...
You can't run yourself thin.
Running alone is not enough. You need to address eating habits too. In my case switching from drinking coke to drinking water is helping, but I'm still eating more than I should, and bars of chocolate are not helping.

Its simple maths really. Calories going in have to be lower than calories going out to lose weight. If I eat more when I excercise more then nothing changes. Also I need to have a look at the types of food I eat. This is sort of beginning to happen naturally because I want to eat food that makes running easier.

What always strikes me is how hard it is to burn off calories through exercise - yet how easy it is to take in excess calories through food. The other day I was working right through an overnight aller At midnight I was feeling grumpy and had the munchies. I hit the vending machine. A couple of king size snickers later I had an extra 800 kCal on board. The next morning after I went off shift I went for a run - the longest I have done (12.5km). I felt great for it. But I tracked my run with RunKeeper. This estimates calorie output. Through running solid for 65 minutes I burned off 950 calories! We've gotta do a heck of a lot of Running burn off our energy intake. Running alone won't cause weight loss unless we do miles and miles. But cutting down calorie-rick foods, slightly smaller portion size and low GI food helps. And even if weight stays the same, you'll be fitter. Mike

For anyone who tracks our would like to track their calories "my fitness pal" app on the Iphone is great or visit the website "www.myfitnesspal.com" is fantastic, lets you know how many calories you should be eating to loose weight, you add your food to a diary and you can add you exercise to it too. The database of the food on it is huge, far better then ones I've seen on weight watchers and Tesco Diets.
